Herman
E. Talmadge
(1913-2002)
Herman Talmadge on the campaign trail Herman Talmadge was governor
of Georgia from January to March 1947, 1948-50, and 1950-54. In 1956,
Talmadge was elected to the United States Senate where he would serve
until he was defeated for reelection in 1980. While in the Senate, Talmadge
was the chair of the Agriculture committee for many years, and he gained
national respect for his role as a member of the Ervin Committee which investigated
the Watergate affair.
