secretary to Ellis Arnall during the Arnall Administration. Before entering politics, Thompson
was a public school teacher and county school superintendent. Thompson was elected Georgia's first lt. governor

would serve as governor until a special election was held in 1948 at which
time Thompson was soundly defeated by Herman Talmadge. In 1950,
Thompson once again ran against Talmadge for the Democratic nomination
for governor, and he was beaten in this bid also.
After losing a final bid for governor in 1954 and a U.S. Senate campaign against Herman Talmadge in 1956, Thompson retired from politics and died in 1980. |
