University Hall 200

Refreshments will be provided

Abstract: For many centuries the problem of finding formulas that solve polynomial equations was one of the central problems in mathematics. This presentation explores some of the ideas that made progress possible and is a tribute to the work of the French  mathematician Evariste Galois. The lecture is accessible to undergraduate students, and they are encouraged to attend.
