Biography

Andre J. Gaskins enjoys a diverse career as soloist, conductor and music educator. He currently serves as Assistant Professor of Cello and Associate Conductor of Orchestral Activities at Columbus State University. His recording of Martinu's 'Concertino' for the Summit Records label was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Awards, in the category of 'Best Performance by a small ensemble (with or without conductor)'. He has served as the teaching assistant to world-renowned cellist, Janos Starker, while pursuing graduate studies at Indiana University. Solo appearances with orchestra have included performances with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Smith Symphony, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra and the Butler Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared in recital in Okinawa, Japan where this performance was aired on NHK TV Japan. He recently completed a concert tour of St. Petersburg, Russian Federation where he appeared as soloist with orchestra in the Grand Philharmonic Hall and the State Academic Capella Hall. Additionally, Mr. Gaskins has been heard in recital in the cities of Indianapolis, Richmond, Cincinnati, Ann Arbor and Beijing, China. As a conductor, Gaskins has served as Music Director of the Earlham College Orchestra, Assistant Conductor of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and Conductor of the New World Youth Chamber Orchestra. Other faculty positions have included Eastern Illinois University, Earlham College and the Brevard Music Center. In addition to his classical background, Mr. Gaskins has recorded for a number of pop and folk music record labels, as a featured cello soloist. Mr. Gaskins can be heard in the soundtrack for the PBS documentary, "For Gold and Glory." He also recorded as a featured soloist for the motion picture soundtrack, "Forgive Me Father." Performances for the 2006-2007 include a performance with the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Indianapolis and conductor for the Guitar Foundation of America Orchestra. Mr. Gaskins has served as principal cellist of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra since 2002. Most recently, he was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Columbus Ballet.
