TI-83 Basics

Home Screen

The home screen is where you perform basic arithmetic and ask your calculator to perform “mini-programs” (ex: Median(L1) will calculate the median of List 1).

2nd ®Quit   will always return you to the Home Screen

            Important notes:

·         To access anything written in yellow, press the 2nd key.

·         Your calculator follows the order of operations strictly.  Make sure you use parenthesis around operations you want performed first.

·         Your calculator does not think a minus sign is a negative sign.  Use for subtraction and (-) for negation.

Entering Data

Rather than manually calculating statistics, the TI-83 has many “mini-programs” that can assist you.  But first, you will need to enter data into your calculator on a LIST which looks a lot like a spread sheet.

                        STAT®Edit   will access the lists.

Important Notes:

·         To remove all the entries from your list, cursor to the top of the list to highlight the name of the list and press Clear.  Do NOT press Delete or it will delete the entire list instead of just the numbers!

·         To replace a deleted list, go to the top of any list and press Insert.  You will then need to name the list.  You may access all the list names by pressing the 2nd button and the number of the list. (ex: 2nd ®1 will access L1)

Operations using Lists

Before asking the calculator to perform any operations on the list you should go to the Home Screen.  When on the Home Screen you can then access most statistics in using the STAT or 2nd STAT button.  You are asking the calculator to run a “mini-program” such as finding the median of a list of numbers.  When you select a “mini-program” it places the words wherever your cursor was before requesting the program.  That’s why you start on the Home Screen! For example, find the median would put this on the Home Screen:

                        median(

You must now tell the calculator on which list to find the median.  If it’s List 1 then press 2nd ®1 and the calculator will print

                        median(L1

Just close the parenthesis and hit ENTER. The median will be displayed.
